Progressive Schenectady was created in the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential election and our concern about the future of our community and our country. Three Niskayuna women created this group as a means of support and activism against the hateful rhetoric and divisiveness in the post-election era. Having deep and legitimate concern for immigrant rights, women’s reproductive rights, civil liberties and more, Progressive Schenectady has held educational, fundraising and social events all with the goal of “activism made easy”. None of the organization’s three founders were activists, so we wanted to create an organization that allowed people with no experience to get involved in a welcoming, unintimidating environment.
We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.
Activism made easy - We seek to provide education, simple steps to action, and camaraderie in defense of democratic ideals.
Our activities have included:
Holiday social/fundraiser for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, wildfire victims in California and a local food pantry
An educational event/fundraiser in support of Dreamers (DACA)
A documentary screening/discussion on global maternal health
A speaker who represented immigrants at JFK airport with the Muslim travel ban
A Progressive picnic which attracted over 150 attendees and area politicians
Numerous post-carding events to thank, to support, and to speak out
